Open source eCommerce platforms - OpenCart, PrestaShop and Magento - give you something no subscription platform can: you own the source code. At Pronet Design, our main platform is OpenCart. Every client store of ours that won a trophy at GPeC, Romania's main eCommerce competition, was built on it. That is not a coincidence. OpenCart gives us room to build whatever a project needs, it performs well, and the local module ecosystem for the Romanian market is the strongest of the three. This guide explains, without sales talk, what each platform does and how to pick the right one for your situation.
Why open source rather than a subscription
Before the comparison, here is what you gain structurally with any open source platform:
- No monthly subscription - you pay once for the build, not every month for the right to keep selling
- No platform commission per sale - the money from each order stays with you
- The source code is yours - you can change agencies whenever you want, with nothing holding you back
- No artificial limits on products, categories or attributes
- Any integration is possible - if the service has an API, the module can be built
According to a 2026 Gaim Solutions study, 35% of companies have already replaced SaaS tools with open source or custom software to get control over their data and their ability to scale.
OpenCart - the platform we build on most
OpenCart (current version 4.1.x) is what Pronet Design uses for most projects. All six client stores that won GPeC trophies were running on it. That is not a marketing line, it is something you can check.
Why OpenCart works so well for the Romanian market:
- A mature local ecosystem - ready-made modules for Romanian couriers (Fan Courier, Sameday), local payment processors (Netopia, PayU, ePlatesc) and invoicing systems (SmartBill, Oblio)
- More than 13,000 extensions in the official marketplace
- A light architecture - average page load around 830 ms, good performance on a standard VPS
- An admin panel your team can actually use without technical training
- Widely used across Eastern Europe, with an active developer community that knows the local quirks
- It scales with you - we run OpenCart stores with hundreds of thousands of products that work perfectly well
WooCommerce - why we do not use it for dedicated stores
WooCommerce, built on WordPress, is the most installed eCommerce system in the world (33.4% market share). It is a fine choice for a site that is mostly a blog or a company presentation with a bit of selling attached.
For a dedicated online store with a real catalogue and real order volume, it has structural limits:
- The WordPress database was not designed for eCommerce - the table structure was built for a CMS, not for a product catalogue with variants, stock levels and complex orders. At volume, performance drops noticeably.
- Every extra feature arrives as another plugin. The more plugins, the slower the site and the higher the chance two of them will disagree.
- Frequent WordPress and WooCommerce updates can break custom work
That is why, for serious eCommerce projects, Pronet Design works on OpenCart, PrestaShop or Magento - platforms built for selling in the first place.
PrestaShop - for selling across borders
PrestaShop (version 9.0.2, released December 2025, built on Symfony 6.4 and PHP 8.4) is the natural pick when the store has to run in several languages and currencies out of the box.
PrestaShop makes sense when:
- You want to sell in other European countries (Bulgaria, Hungary, Greece) with separate VAT setups under the OSS scheme
- You need multi-language support natively, without extra modules
- Your catalogue has complex characteristics that map well onto the native PrestaShop structure
PrestaShop is not better than OpenCart - it is different. Each has its cases. We recommend PrestaShop when selling abroad is a goal from day one.
Magento Open Source - for enterprise volume
Magento (version 2.4.8, April 2025, PHP 8.3 support) is the reference platform for large stores with complex requirements.
Magento makes sense when:
- Online turnover is above EUR 1-2 million a year
- The catalogue is large and comes with specific enterprise requirements
- You need advanced B2B features natively (customer-specific price lists, approval workflows)
- You run several storefronts at once with independent configurations
Magento takes more work to administer and needs sturdier infrastructure. It is not a fit for every budget - but for a business that has grown into enterprise needs, it is the right call. Romania has 24 certified Adobe Commerce partners (Adobe Commerce Marketplace, 2025).

How to choose - four straight questions

What the agency actually does
All three platforms are free to download. But a proper build - custom design, the local integrations (couriers, invoicing, payment processors), SEO groundwork and a security setup that holds - takes real experience with that specific platform.
Pronet Design (Sibiu, 160+ projects, award-winning stores at GPeC) works mainly on OpenCart, and on PrestaShop and Magento where they fit better. We recommend the platform after looking at the project, not before. Either way the client gets the full source code - no dependency on us, and none on a subscription platform.

Frequently asked questions
Why does Pronet work mainly on OpenCart rather than PrestaShop?
OpenCart has the best local ecosystem for the Romanian market - native modules for the couriers, payment processors and invoicing systems used here. And the GPeC results show that, built properly, it produces stores that compete at the top. That is not an opinion, it is what the portfolio shows.
Can I move from OpenCart to Magento later if I grow?
Yes, but it is a full redesign project rather than a simple platform switch. Products, customers and orders migrate; the theme and the integrations get rebuilt. If you expect to reach enterprise volume, it is worth deciding early which platform makes sense long term.
Is WooCommerce an option for a serious store?
For a presentation site with a handful of products, or a blog with selling bolted on, yes. For a dedicated store with a large catalogue, real order volume and complex integrations, the WordPress database was never built for eCommerce and performance becomes a problem sooner or later.
Do the Romanian courier and payment integrations exist on all three platforms?
